Mirre (Commiphora abyssinica)

Mirre, ook bekend als Abessijnse mirre of Commiphora habessinica, is een plant die voornamelijk voorkomt in Noordoost-Afrika, met name in Somalië, Ethiopië en Eritrea. Het is een struik of kleine boom die tot 4 meter hoog kan worden. De schors wordt gebruikt om een hars te winnen dat bekend staat als mirre, dat van oudsher op veel gebieden wordt gebruikt, van medicijnen tot religieuze rituelen.

Echte mirre, die uit deze soort wordt gewonnen, heeft een karakteristieke scherpe, bittere en aromatische smaak. Deze hars wordt gebruikt in cosmetica, vooral in parfumerie en aromatherapie vanwege zijn unieke geur. Mirre heeft ook een plaats in de geneeskunde. In de traditionele Ayurveda en Chinese geneeskunde wordt het gebruikt om spijsverteringsproblemen te verlichten, wonden te genezen en ook als antisepticum. Het zit ook in veel mondverzorgingsproducten zoals tandpasta en mondwater, waar het werkt als ontsmettingsmiddel en de mondholte hydrateert. Daarnaast wordt mirre ook gebruikt in de voedingsindustrie, als ingrediënt in sommige alcoholische dranken en in de zoetwarenindustrie voor zijn specifieke aroma.
